Do You Need an Espresso Grinder Before Buying a Machine?

Short answer: not always—but the grinder becomes much more important when you want to use a non-pressurized espresso basket and control the result yourself.
When you can wait on the grinder
A beginner can start with a machine that includes a pressurized or dual-wall basket and use suitable pre-ground espresso. That is the simpler route when you are learning the machine, have a limited budget, or want to decide later whether home espresso is a long-term hobby. It is not the same as building a fully adjustable workflow, but it can be a reasonable first step.
When the grinder should come first
Buy the grinder first if your goal is to adjust grind size as part of dialing in espresso, use fresh beans, or move toward a non-pressurized basket. Espresso needs a much narrower grind range than basic drip coffee. A grinder that cannot reach and adjust within that range can become the bottleneck even if the machine itself is capable.
What to check before you buy
1. Confirm that the grinder has an espresso-focused adjustment range.
2. Confirm your portafilter size. A dosing cup is helpful, but it does not guarantee every machine is compatible.
3. Leave counter room for the grinder, beans, scale, and cleanup.
4. Do not buy a 51 mm, 54 mm, or 58 mm accessory by guessing—measure or confirm the exact machine model.
A documented espresso-capable option
The Baratza Encore ESP has a dedicated espresso range plus a separate range for other brew methods. Baratza also documents a 54 mm dosing cup and a 58 mm adapter. That makes it worth considering for a setup that may grow, but you should still verify your specific machine and basket before ordering.
